One of the factors that sets winning Backgammon players apart from the average and mediocre is that they take the time to study their opponent, not just the game itself. If you want to become a good player, you should at least learn what player reading is about.
When it comes to Backgammon strategies, there is general agreement in some areas, such as using the blitz if you hit the opponent early, or turning it into a prime game if you are behind in the points. However, while analyzing your opponent's tendencies is crucial, there is no consensus on how to approach it.
One school of thought is that it is best to change your Backgammon strategy in accordance with your opponent's style of play. For instance, if the other player is passive or reluctant to make the big moves, then you can change to an attack mode, flustering him completely.
One of the best ways to decipher a player's tendencies or makeup is with the doubling cube; they either use it too early or too late in the game. In the case of the former, your Backgammon strategy should be to just wait for him to use the cube. When it is your turn, do not use the cube immediately but only when it is appropriate (i.e., you have a sizeable lead and can end the game).
On the other hand there are players who do not use the double because they lack the confidence. They never feel their lead is large enough. If that is the case, then you can attack, knowing that if you fall back a little he will not have the confidence to use the doubling cube to finish you off.
Then there are those players who rely on the same predictable Backgammon strategies. If their style of play is predictable, then you can throw them off by using primes or the holding game.
However it should be stressed that there are those who believe that altering your style to suit your opponent is not necessary. Some believe that altering your own approach may affect the way you play the game, giving the advantage to your opponent. For some, the only way to play is your own way.
In the end, whether you prefer to change your style depending on your opponent, or you play only one method is up to you. What is important is that you develop the ability to discern and figure your opponent's approach. Know his playing style, and you are halfway to victory in Backgammon.
